Vegan Restaurant Customers Assaulted by 'Sausage-Wielding' Neo-Nazis

The attackers pelted patrons with meat, sausage, and fish

Patrons of a vegan restaurant in Tbilisi, Georgia were victim to an assault by "sausage-wielding attackers" last weekend, reports the New York Times. According to a post on the restaurant's Facebook page, the group entered the Kiwi-Café during a movie screening, at which point they "started to get violent."

"It all started when they came into the cafe speaking and laughing loudly and didn't care when we asked them to be quiet and not to disturb the people who came to watch the film," reads the restaurant's post. "Continuing to act loudly and disturbingly, they pulled out some grilled meat, sausages, fish and started eating them and throwing them at us, and finally they started to smoke."

Newsweek reports that a brawl resulted from the incident, after which police were called. No injuries were reported.

According to the restaurant, the protesters "were neo-Nazis...who support fascist ideas." The Times suggests that the attack could be tied to a cultural battle now happening in the country. Georgia, a former Soviet republic, is currently seeking "to draw closer to the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, even as some conservative forces push back at perceived encroaching liberalism." These added tensions clearly have meat eaters and vegans at odds.
