Hostess Recalls 700,000 Cases of Ding Dongs and Zingers

Beware peanuts lurking in your snack cakes

Hostess is recalling thousands of snacks over peanut allergy fears. The company is "voluntarily recalling 710,000 cases of its popular snacks 'out of an abundance of caution' because of undeclared peanut residue," WDIV Detroit reports.

Affected products include Ding Dongs, Zingers, Chocodiles (AKA chocolate-covered Twinkies), and mini doughnuts. Classic Twinkies appear to have been spared.

According to the FDA, the company has so far received two reports of allergic reactions due to peanut residue in the products. The residue was found in flour from a Hostess supplier, Grain Craft.

A similar recall (also due to peanut-laced flour, though from a different supplier) occurred last month at Chick-fil-A, Cinnabon, 7-Eleven, and grocery stores like Safeway and Jewel.

Hostess has made headway since filing for bankruptcy in 2013, during which time it shut down its original Twinkie factory in Schiller Park, Illinois. The company was reportedly heading for an IPO last year, though executives have since denounced those rumors.

With multiple recent lawsuits resulting from undisclosed peanuts in restaurant food — including one in the UK following an allergic diner's death — food manufacturers clearly can't be too careful when it comes to nuts.
