The Iowa State Fair's New Food Options Include Nacho Balls and Apple Pie on a Stick

If you're looking for unlikely food served on a stick, Iowa is the right place.

Knowing that absurd deep-fried snacks are always top priority, the Iowa State Fair features more than 200 stands with a whopping 70 different foods served on a stick. This year, the fair has upped the ante with the recent announcement of its newest food lineup. While all the dishes sound, um, interesting, some may prove too ridiculous for the average Iowan. Not to be outdone by the Minnesota's State Fair's Sriracha Balls, here are some of the standout (and calorie-packed) concoctions Iowans can expect at the fairgrounds.

Apple Pie On-A-Stick

How does one get an apple pie on a stick, you ask? Well, you deep fry it, of course. But not before dipping the sliced apples in funnel cake batter and apple pie spice. Bonus: The whole thing is topped with cinnamon sugar and served with a side of gooey caramel.

Deep-Fried Nacho Balls

Eliminating the usual mess that comes along with nachos, a forward-thinking soul has shoved all of the typical ingredients into one perfect orb. The balls — filled to max capacity with ground beef, jalapeños, and cheddar cheese — are rolled in a nacho cheese-Dorito crust before being thrown in the fryer and served up with a side of nacho cheese.

Ultimate Bacon Explosion

Bacon lovers in Iowa, rejoice. This swine-centric dish features smoked ground brisket, onions, pepper cheese, and diced jalapeños, all wrapped in bacon and finished with a sweet and spicy chili glaze.

Toasted Coconut Caramel Cluster

Made of shredded coconut, pretzel pieces, and caramel, the clusters are dipped in chocolate and — no surprise here — served on a stick.

Corn in a Cup

While this may seem self explanatory, the Iowa State fair was kind enough to provide a description for this seemingly simple treat and, surprisingly, it's not just a cup of corn. The snack comes in two varieties: The Iowan (corn niblets, cheddar cheese, pork sausage, mayo, butter, lime, and "spicy magic dust," whatever that is) and The Mexican (corn niblets, pork chorizo, butter, mayo, coyote cheese, lime, and the aforementioned "spicy magic dust").

To hungry Midwestern gourmands you find their way to the delicious treat-on-a-stick of their choice, the tech-savvy brains behind the fair have developed an Iowa State Fair Food Finder app, available for iOS.
