Inspired on a perfect circle, this space is outlined by 64 pyramidal structures that hold in its center a petrified sea of lava from the Xitle volcano eruption. This is a perfect example of how urban experimental architecture merged with the pre-Hispanic symbolism to create a majestic monument.
It was open to commemorate UNAM’s 50 years in 1979. This gargantuan oeuvre is hidden in the natural reserve of Pedregal de San Ángel, part of the Centro Cultural Universitario (University’s Cultural Center). The 120 meter long space was conceived as part of a collective endeavor that sought to overthrow the individualist tendencies of the époque, as well as proposing a new way to build and experience public spaces in the city. This effort ended in a conception of the landscape unified with the architectural forms that allow us to live a mystic experience.
The creators of this space tried to reproduce a sensation of being both in the beginning and the end at the same time: this view was based on the cosmogony of pre-Hispanic cultures. The “Espacio Escultórico” is a magical place capable of seducing anyone due to its beauty and perfection and also because it is far from the urban hustle and bustle. This place is open Monday to Fridays, from 9:00 to 18:00 and entrance is free.
