UCLA's Craft Brewing Class Is a Beer Nerd's Dream

Here's a reason to go back to school

UCLA's Extension program, which offers continuing education to working adults and college students alike, is sure to see an enrollment spike thanks to one if its newest courses. The school now offers A Class of Beer: An Overview of the Craft Brewing Renaissance, serving as "an introduction to the craft beer movement for homebrewers, food-and-beverage professionals, or people who just like good beer."

A Class of Beer focuses on history, brewing techniques, and business strategies, and it includes field trips to breweries in the Los Angeles area. Students in the the inaugural term recently visited Monkish Brewing, where instructor Tomm Carroll allowed the brewery's owner, Henry Nguyen, to share a lesson on what it takes to make it in the industry.

The course's synopsis describes it as "a primer on all things craft beer," and it's not just for individuals interested in going pro in the business. One student joined "to learn why I've been homebrewing such terrible beer," according to the school's newsroom. Another is interested in gaining "a very good understanding of the process, different types of beer."

While the first course's syllabus has already been set, perhaps future editions will dive into the history of the 5,000-year-old brewing operation that was recently uncovered in China. It comes as no surprise that anyone who wants to take the class will need to act quickly the next time enrollment opens. This time around, the university says there was a waiting list of 50 people.
