France's Newest Museum Is Dedicated to Bordeaux Wine

If there was ever a doubt that France or Bordeaux takes its wine seriously, a new development settles it. A £63 million (about $92.4 million) wine museum called La Cité du Vin is set to open next week ahead of the 10th Bordeaux Wine Festival, according to the Telegraph, which snagged an early look inside the building's exhibits, tasting rooms, and wine shop.

The museum is designed to be an immersive experience, according to its website, and the building itself appropriately bears strong resemblance to a wine decanter. Located on the Garonne river, the place offers self-guided tours and will have both permanent and temporary exhibitions covering everything from the history of wine to wine regions around the world.

La Cité du Vin will also have shows, workshops, restaurants, shops, and wine samples, spread out over 20 themed areas inside, like an adult-appropriate theme park. The anticipated annual attendance is somewhere around 450,000 visitors. The museum is yet another sign that Bordeaux is evolving, as consumer trends are having an influence on the wine industry of the region.
