Airline Food Documentary Launches $75,000 Kickstarter

Finally, an answer to the age-old question

The subpar quality of in-flight meals is one of the world's longest-running jokes — seriously, what is the deal with airline food? — but one frequent flier wants to take a serious look at the food that's served at 35,000 feet.

Nik Loukas is what you might call an in-flight meal expert; in 2012, he founded inflightfeed.com, a site that offers info and reviews on the food served by a bevy of airlines, with articles like "The Best Chicken Schnitzel at 35,000 Feet???" and "Can Inflight Pizza Be Great?" Now, he's working on a feature-length documentary called The Inflight Food Trip that will "pull back the curtain on how airlines source, prepare and deliver meals to passengers", and has launched a Kickstarter with the goal of raising $75,000 for production and travel costs.

"Our purpose is to tell stories," Loukas says via press release, "and each airline we feature has a unique story behind how they produce their passengers' meals. Whether one thinks a particular meal is good or bad, what can't be denied is the level of planning and precision that goes into creating these menus. We want to show people what they've probably always taken for granted. The 'stars' of our film will be not just the airlines, but also cabin crews, inflight caterers and the general public." It will also delve into the history of airline food going back to 1919.

The Inflight Food Trip will include behind-the-scenes looks at the culinary operations of Air France, Qantas, Turkish Airlines, and a number of others, and Loukas and crew will be filming on several continents including Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. Filming is set to begin this August.
