Salmonella Outbreak in Nine States Likely Linked to Sushi Containing Raw Tuna

Might want to rethink those plans for a sushi dinner: According to the Associated Press, health officials are investigating an outbreak of salmonella that is likely linked to raw tuna. So far, the outbreak has sickened 53 people across nine states. 31 of those cases occurred in California. Other affected states include Arizona, Illinois, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. Of the 53 cases, 10 people have been hospitalized, but there have been no deaths.

Officials say that the source of the outbreak is unknown, but many of the people who have fallen ill "reported eating sushi containing raw tuna." This isn't the first time sushi has resulted in a Salmonella outbreak. In 2012, a ground tuna product frequently used in spicy tuna rolls was linked to an outbreak of the bacteria that sickened over 100 people across 20 states.

Salmonella is one of the most common sources of food poisoning in the U.S. While it is not as deadly as some other types of bacteria, Salmonella can cause severe diarrhea, cramping, and fever.
