Wine Dispenser Kickstarter Raises $100,000 in Just 15 Hours

Plus, a look back at other wine tech

Less than 15 hours after its launch, wine dispenser startup Somm by SYNEK reached its Kickstarter goal of $100,000 — and the funding continues to grow.

Founder Steve Young claims the countertop wine dispenser can pour a perfect glass and will "learn" the wine preferences of its users over time. So how does it work? Similar to a Keurig or Nespresso coffee-maker, Somm utilizes a vessel (called a "sylo") which Young says allows the wine to remain virtually untouched and preserved. Those sylos hold up to three bottles of wine each, fit in a standard wine rack and are eco-friendly, unlike many other beverage dispenser pods.

The "smart" sylos can also communicate with the machine, allowing it to chill and aerate each wine based on its specific needs. Users can update their beverage choices on the corresponding smartphone app, which will order more wine when supplies are low. According to its Kickstarter, Somm hopes to launch by Christmas 2016 and will retail for $299.

The project is modeled after SYNEK's craft-beer dispenser, which raised more than $648,000 on Kickstarter, and is the latest in a slew of high-tech devices geared toward wine-drinkers. In March, Boston-based startup Kuvée unveiled a $179 wi-fi enabled bottle that aims to keep wine fresher, longer. At Washington State University, a $90,000 electric tongue assists the School of Food Science in detecting specific flavors in food and wine.

According to a 2015 survey on consumer wine preferences, a majority of Americans will spend approximately $10-$15 on a bottle of wine to drink at home. Whether they'll be willing to shell out hundreds more on high-tech wine devices remains to be seen.
