Waffle House Customers Defend Restaurant From an Armed Robbery

The suspect was last seen jumping over a fence

An armed robber at a Waffle House came away empty-handed this weekend after customers intervened. A male suspect with a bandana over his face entered the restaurant in Fayetteville, North Carolina just after 5 a.m., reports The Fayetteville Observer; he pointed an "AK-47 style rifle" at employees and demanded cash.

A customer confronted the would-be robber and at this point "a struggle ensued," police say; several patrons then chased the suspect out of the restaurant, and witnesses say he was last seen jumping a fence. The police report does not mention any injuries, and says the investigation is ongoing.

It's not the first time Waffle House customers have intervened during a robbery: Last year, a customer in Charleston, South Carolina shot and killed an armed robber who opened fire in the restaurant, and in 2013 a robbery suspect was shot by a Waffle House customer who happened to be an off-duty security guard.
