12 new restaurants to visit in the Japanese capital.
Today, Eater makes its long-awaited return to Tokyo to discover the newest drinking and dining destinations the Japanese capital has to offer. Just like last time, Japan Times restaurant reviewer and Tokyo Food File blogger Robbie Swinnerton shares his picks for the 12 most exciting restaurant and cafe openings of the past year.
On the heels of Japan's 2016 Michelin announcements, which notified restaurant recipients earlier this week, the Tokyo restaurant scene is buzzing. Three newly minted Michelin recipients make Swinnerton's map: the revamped tasting menu destination Florilège, the seafood-focused Abysse, and rising star chef Yujiro Takahashi's Le Sputnik, all of which earned one star. Also bringing the heat: a "premium" yakiniku (grilled meat) restaurant (Sumibiyakiniku Nakahara), an under-the-radar modernist spot from an elBulli alum (Celaravird), and a long-awaited expansion from the ramen masters at Kagari. Here now — and in alphabetical order — the Eater Heatmap to Tokyo:
