McDonald's Gives Away Free Metro Rides in Washington, D.C.

The chain hopes to draw more customers with some mass-transit freebies

McDonald's is about to kick off another Monopoly campaign, and to celebrate in Washington, D.C., the chain is helping patrons advance past go via free rides on the city's Metro service. McDonald's told the Washington Post it gave away $10,000 in fares in honor of Metro's 40th anniversary.

A spokesperson for the Golden Arches told the Post the chain handed out 2,000 SmarTrip cards loaded with $5 apiece at five Metro stations during Tuesday morning's commute. They were packaged in commemorative sleeves to market the company's annual Monopoly game, "which features a few of its own nods to the railroad." McDonald's said it funded the entire promotion.

McDonald's latest marketing efforts, both Monopoly nationwide and the Metro giveaways in D.C., come as the chain has an opportunity to capitalize on some recent good news. After a years-long decline, McDonald's has increased sales in two consecutive quarters. With the success of all-day breakfast, the chain is considering expanding the menu to further boost sales.

There's no word on whether Mickey D's will offer similar mass-transit giveaways in other cities. Eater has reached out for more information. As for the Monopoly promotion, a spokesperson tells Eater 100 million food and cash prizes are available to win across the country.
