Forget brown. Buicks now come in "Choccachino."
Car colors are starting to look and sound more like your favorite foods. Brand Eating reports that designers at Buick are drawing inspiration from Instagram food porn for vehicle paint development. In a company release, Buick notes that several of its 2016 model vehicles feature colors like the very coffee-sounding "Choccachino" and "toasted coconut metallic." There's even a green shade inspired by one favorite edible thistle — the artichoke. Buick reports that its designers have tagged more than 178 million food images on their Instagram accounts
Apparently there's some method to the edibly-inspired paint madness. According to a study by the automotive paint maker PPG Industries, 60 percent of consumers take color into consideration when purchasing a new vehicle. To take it a step farther, automotive companies are hoping that consumers positive associations with food will translate into more car sales.
Of course inspiration goes both ways. Grant Achatz has drawn parallels between cooking and building a car. Meanwhile, in 2011 a man named Martin Bacon built a coffee-powered car named "the Carpuccino." It reached speeds of up to 58.5 mph and lead to some over-brewed jokes about the power of caffeine.
