It is currently only available in Pittsburgh.
KFC is testing Nashville-style hot chicken — in Pittsburgh. According to the chain's website, the new menu item is a "spicy bird with a savory burn" that is made with cayenne and smoked paprika. The hot chicken is currently only available in Pittsburgh but KFC notes that it will soon be sold everywhere.
The Tennessean writes that KFC's move is "either a sign of the apocalypse or the sincerest form of flattery," but many local restaurateurs believe it's the latter. Nick Bishop Sr. who works at famed Nashville hot chicken restaurant Hattie B's says that he isn't surprised: "In the last year or so, restaurants in New York City have opened hot chicken establishments... It's a Nashville original, and we're excited it is being so well received across the country." When told about KFC's new dish, Andre Prince Jeffries — the owner of Prince's Hot Chicken Shack — told the Tennessean, "Have mercy!" before adding, "Well, it's up for grabs. It's amazing how it's all really out there."
This is the first major new menu item KFC has released since it underwent a hipster makeover earlier this year. Nashville Hot Chicken is a surprising addition, considering that usually KFC goes for high shock value by selling stunt items like the Double Down, pizza with a fried chicken crust, and edible cookie coffee cups.
