Google Maps Wants Your Food Porn

Finally, a use for all those burger photos on your phone.

The scores of food photos on your phone's camera roll could soon be internet famous: It looks like Google Maps' points for restaurants will soon include user-submitted photos of the food. Android Police says the new feature "will apparently alert users when Maps has found a newly-captured photo taken at a food-related place on their device, and offer to attach that photo to a location for other users to see."

The new feature, which doesn't yet have a name, is currently only available for Google's top community reviewers (or "Local Guides"). As The Verge points out, "We live in a world where no one can eat food at a restaurant without first taking photos of it — it's about time someone found a use for them." (A use other than populating your Instagram feed, anyway.)

Google has shown interest in food porn before: The company is working on technology that could determine a food's calorie content just from looking at a photo. And Google's interest in food and drink runs much deeper: Users can already order delivery directly from its search engine, make restaurant reservations via OpenTable from the Maps application, find out when restaurants are the most crowded, and even learn to make fancy cocktails.
