High-Tech 3D Printer Makes Boats Out of Marzipan

Liver pâté mazes too.

Who wouldn't want a 3D marzipan boat to call their own? According to 3Dprint.com, German startup Print2Taste is bringing a high-tech food printer called Bocusini to market that's capable of making your wildest marzipan dreams come to life. The company, which launched a successful Kickstarter campaign in May, plans to unveil its first model in February 2016.

The WiFi-controlled, open-source printer retails for approximately $1,014 USD and is available for pre-order now. Bocusini comes with retrofitting options that expand the printer's capabilities and pre-filled "natural" food cartridges that offer the correct consistency for accurate 3D printing, including liver pâté, cookie dough, chocolate, jelly, vegetable paste, mashed potatoes, and more. Buyers will have access to designs on the company website and can also work with the Print2Taste to develop food formulas that suit their needs.

Entrepreneurs and food researchers see many potential applications for 3D printing technology in the dining world. A Dutch designer recently speculated that 3D printing could be the future of sustainable food. Meanwhile, tech companies than are rushing to bring food printers to market. China-based tech giant Lenovo unveiled its 3D food printer model in June and startup cleverly named PancakeBot launched a crowdfunding effort in March to bring 3D printed pancakes into consumer homes.
