All Pittsburgh Restaurant Workers Are Now Guaranteed Paid Sick Days

The city council just passed the proposal, seven to one.

Here's some good news for restaurant workers in Pittsburgh: According to Think Progress, the city council passed a bill today that requires businesses with 15 employees or more to give workers at least five paid sick days. Those with fewer than 15 employees will be required to give workers at least three paid sick days. Employees are also allowed to use the days to care for a spouse, partner, child, parent, grandparent, or sibling. The bill was passed, seven to one.

Currently 77 percent of the city's service workers do not have access to paid sick leave. Kati Sipp, the director of organization PA Working Families, tells Think Progress that this is a "huge victory" for Pittsburgh workers: "This legislation will give more than 49,000 Pittsburgh workers paid sick leave." Pittsburgh is the second city in Pennsylvania to pass a sick leave law — Philadelphia passed a similar bill earlier this year — and the 20th city in the nation.

In January, President Barack Obama tried to pass a proposal that would mandate paid sick leave for millions of workers across the nation. Per the proposal, employees would earn one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours they worked. The mandate would affect both part-time and full-time workers. However, so far, the proposal has not passed.
