Matthew Stonie beat eight-time champion Joey Chestnut.
There's officially a new hot dog eating champion for the first time in nearly a decade. On the Fourth of July, competitive eater Matthew Stonie managed to stuff 62 hot dogs (with buns) down his throat in 10 minutes at the annual Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Contest on New York's Coney Island, writes CNN. According to ESPN's Darren Rovell, Stonie consumed 17,360 calories, 1,116 grams of fat, and 48,360 milligrams of of sodium in that brief period of time. Stonie beat reigning champion Joey Chestnut who has won the contest every year since 2007. This year, Chestnut only managed to eat 60 hot dogs with buns (he still holds the all-time record of 69 hot dogs that he set in 2013).

Stone — who is 5-foot-8 and 130 pounds — tells CNN that he trained hard for the competition: "To beat him by a couple of hot dogs this year is... you know I trained hard for this and I can't say I came in confident, but I came prepared." Chestnut chalks up his loss to a poor performance and adds that he is glad that he now has competition: "I've been looking for a competition for a long time and now I have it, and now he's made me hungry."

Chestnut used to have competition in the form of famed eater Takeru Kobayashi who won the contest every year from 2001 to 2006. However, Kobayashi has not competed in the hot dog eating contest since 2009 due to a contract dispute with Nathan's Famous. However, Chestnut revealed last week that the two competitive eaters will likely face-off again soon: "There has been talk of an exhibition... I don't even know if I should be saying it, but apparently he's agreed to it and Major League Eating has allowed me to do it, so maybe later this year."
