The value meal saga continues.
Pour one out for $1 drive-thru mozzarella sticks, because they're a thing no longer at McDonald's. The world's biggest burger chain seems to have put an end to its recently unveiled 2-for-$2 value meal deal, Consumerist reports.
Now, instead of getting two items — including the McDouble, the McChicken, a small fry, and the aforementioned cheese sticks — for $2, patrons will have to plunk down $5 to take advantage of the "McPick 2" concept. Consumerist says the new, pricier meal deal includes options of the Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, Filet-O-Fish, chicken nuggets, and fries.
The "McPick 2 for $2" promo was unveiled in January, and was only intended to be a limited-time promotion. It was the sum of McDonald's efforts to oust its long-running (and incredibly popular) Dollar Menu; as food and labor costs have risen, McDonald's is presumably trying to boost its average check, and a $5 visit is much better for its bottom line than a $1 or $2 one. (Eater has reached out to McDonald's for more info on its new deal, but Consumerist notes that the promo may vary by location.)
Despite its inclusion of more "premium" offerings like Big Macs, the two-for-$5 switcheroo makes McDonald's value deal seem considerably more expensive than deals other fast-food chains are promoting right now: Burger King is currently touting a five-items-for-$4 deal, and Wendy's has a four-for-$4 deal going. This fact isn't lost on fast-food lovers, either:
McDonald's went from 2 for $2 to 2 for $5. Joke. I'll go to Wendy's where I can get 4 for $4.

I see @McDonalds stopped "2 for $2" while drive-thru signs were still up. Now it's 2 for 5. @BurgerKing 5 for 4 beats that

Then again, two bucks for two orders of mozzarella sticks wasn't actually that great of a deal when they turned out to be hollow inside. (Amazingly enough, McDonald's is currently facing a class-action lawsuit over that very issue.)
