A sad day for the restaurant world.
Acclaimed French-Swiss chef Benoît Violier of the three Michelin starred Restaurant de l'Hotel de Ville Crissier was found dead in his home over the weekend of an apparent suicide, and today hundreds turned out to mourn his death in Switzerland.
According to The Daily Mail, the 1,500 people who attended Violier's funeral at a Swiss cathedral included some of "Switzerland's best-known chefs, including Frédy Girardet, whose family started the Hôtel de Ville, and Anton Mosimann ... along with Swiss ministers and the city's mayor."
The news of Violier's death broke on the same day that Michelin announced its 2016 stars for France; according to Swiss news site 24 Heures, Violier was scheduled to attend the launch event for the new guide on Monday. Restaurant de l'Hotel de Ville Crissier maintained its three-star rating in the 2016 Michelin guide.
Violier leaves behind a wife and a son; per his wife's urging, the restaurant reopened for business just days after his death. The chef's death has prompted many to take a hard look at the restaurant industry and the intense pressures that may be driving wildly successful chefs like Violier and Chicago's Homaro Cantu to such tragic ends.
