The bar has been fined $156,000.
Just in case you needed another reason to never drink Jägermeister again: A woman in the UK had to have a portion of her stomach surgically removed after drinking a liquid nitrogen-infused shot of the frat boy favorite.
The BBC reports that Gaby Scanlon was celebrating her 18th birthday at Oscar's Wine Bar in Lancaster, England when she was served the £3.95 ($6 USD) shot:
Describing the moment she drank the shot, Ms Scanlon told the court: "I turned to the man and asked if it was okay to drink. He said 'Yes'. "Smoke was coming from my nose and mouth. Straight away I knew something was not right. My stomach expanded."
Pouring liquid nitrogen into drinks to make them appear to "smoke" isn't uncommon, but the BBC notes that "physicists say the liquid must completely evaporate before the drink is safe for consumption." According to a report by The Telegraph, a friend of Scanlon's who was present claims the bartender told her to "drink it while it's still smoking."
She was taken to the hospital where a CT scan revealed "a large perforation in her stomach." Scanlon spent three weeks in the hospital "undergoing surgery to remove her stomach and connect her esophagus directly to her small bowel."
The wine bar has been fined £100,000 ($156,000 USD) after admitting "it failed to ensure the shot cocktail was safe for consumption." A health and safety officer who visited the bar a few months prior "said he had concerns about the drinks and sent a letter with guidance on liquid nitrogen usage," but said letter apparently fell on deaf ears and he never received a response.
In another example of bars in Europe being held liable for irresponsible serving, a French bar owner was recently charged with manslaughter. This was after a customer drank 56 shots at the bar and subsequently died after going into cardiac arrest.
