Obama and Putin Drink Rosé; Free Coffee Offers Abound

Plus more food news from across the world.

— What's this? Oh nothing, just world leaders and totally chill bros Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin sipping on some rosé during yesterday's United Nations General Assembly in NYC. No big deal.

— Attention, Ugg-wearing pumpkin spice latte devotees: Delivery app Postmates is blessing its users with free Starbucks PSLs on demand this week. (You've still got to pay the nominal delivery fee.) The offer is available in several, but not all, Postmates-served cities including Portland, Dallas, San Diego, Austin, and Atlanta.

— And since it's apparently National Coffee Day, other companies are also giving away free caffeine boosts: Score free or heavily discounted coffee today at various chains including Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme. (Whole Foods is also serving 25-cent coffee through the end of September.)

— Besides elevating the American population's taste for better pies, the artisanal pizza boom is having another (perhaps unexpected) consequence: It's giving the coal mining industry a boost. The coal industry hasn't had an easy go of things in recent years, but Pennsylvania-based Blaschak Coal Corp. says pizza places with coal-fired ovens are now its fastest-growing sector.

— Must be nice to be Rachael Ray and get a Shake Shack burger created in your honor:

— Burger King France is preparing to gobble up its competition. BK is in talks to purchase Belgian fast food chain Quick, which would "expand its number of restaurants in France tenfold to 500." (Only Quick locations in France would adopt the Burger King name.) That would still pale in comparison to McDonald's, which has more than 1,300 locations across France.

— Meanwhile, Burger King Portugal is honoring its American roots with a new line of "American street food"-themed burgers:

— New York's chicken sandwich wars are heating up: The city's first full-service Chick-fil-A hits Midtown this weekend, with several more locations planned for Manhattan over the next two years. Perhaps the Atlanta-based chicken chain can feed overflow crowds from David Chang's hysteria-inducing chicken sandwich spot Fuku, which launched a second location in Midtown earlier this month.

— British chef and Gordon Ramsay arch-nemesis Jamie Oliver continues to expand his restaurant empire: He's planning to open a location of Jamie's Italian in Budapest, Hungary come Spring 2016. The chain already has dozens of locations in the UK, as well as outposts in Hong Kong, Russia, and and Turkey.

— NYC tasting-menu-only restaurant Contra is celebrating two years in business next month. Chefs Fabian von Hauske and Jeremiah Stone are bringing in some serious talent to help commemorate the occasion: They'll cook a two-night collaborative dinner with chef Iñaki Aizpitarte of Le Chateaubriand in Paris on October 9 and 10. It's $150 a head, and reservations can be made by emailing info@contranyc.com.

— Finally, a moment of nihilistic zen:
