Three Food Delivery Apps Sued For Allegedly Failing to Give Workers Benefits

The suits claim drivers for GrubHub, DoorDash, and Caviar are treated as employees, with none of the benefits.

On-demand food delivery apps are all the rage these days, but not everyone is thrilled with how companies like Caviar, GrubHub, and DoorDash operate: The three companies are now facing lawsuits claiming that "they misclassified their delivery drivers as independent contractors," reports the Chicago Tribune.

The three separate-but-similar suits were filed in San Francisco, where litigation of the same kind is also currently pending against Uber. The complaint against GrubHub claims that the company "treated its delivery drivers as employees but failed to provide any of the benefits — such as expense reimbursements for gas, parking and phone data, meeting minimum wage requirements, and paying drivers for overtime."

As the already-crowded delivery app space continues to see incredible growth, with big companies like Uber and Groupon tossing their hats into the ring, it was only a matter of time until the employees vs. independent contractors issue saw its day in court. With fast food workers embarking on a widespread campaign to fight for higher wages and better benefits, it's no wonder that the people who deliver on your late-night lo mein cravings are also looking to improve their standing, too.
