Korean Restaurant Sets Solo Diners Up on Surprise Blind Dates

Surprise!

Antisocial people of the world, meet your new nightmare: A Korean restaurant where solo diners suddenly find themselves on blind dates. Per RocketNews, the stunt restaurant nabs single customers off the street by promising them a free meal.

After getting their food, the diners are asked by a tablet on the wall if they'd like some company. For those who are bold enough to choose "yes," a wall panel suddenly slides back to put them face-to-face with another equally shocked diner, turning a lonely noodle-slurping session into an unnervingly intimate dinner date.

Although solo dining is widely embraced in America, in some other countries such as China it's just now beginning to lose its taboo status. Certain restaurants have gone to great lengths to ensure solo diners don't get lonely: At Japan's Moomin Cafe, solo diners are joined by stuffed animals, and a Tokyo restaurant called PiaPia banned couples on Christmas Eve so singles wouldn't feel bad. On the other hand, a pop-up restaurant in Denmark embraced solo diners, offering only tables for one.
