Anthony Bourdain's show allegedly "glorifies and wallows in the savage, brutal suffering, and slaughter of animals."
Calling it a show that "glorifies and wallows in the savage, brutal suffering, and slaughter of animals," one animal rights activist is collecting signatures in an attempt to get Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown off the air. The online petition to CNN currently has more than 15,000 signatures, and it certainly doesn't mince any words.
It's not enough for Anthony to just talk about culture and food; he must show a camel having his head slowly and bloodily hacked off, a roasted pig on a plate, and a close-up of a buck being shot to death, emphasizing the expression on the deer's face for full, horrific impact.
Not everyone agrees with killing animals for food, and that's fine. Although, the argument can be made that Bourdain is showing viewers exactly where their meal might come from, information that could help to improve the foodways in America. If one is offended by the way animals are killed on Parts Unknown, a petition to huge food companies around the world would be a better idea. Many corporate slaughterhouses would make Bourdain's antics seem fairly tame.
Reached by email, CNN spokesperson Karen Reynolds declined to comment on the petition. The sixth season of Parts Unknown premieres September 27 and will feature trips to Marseille, Cuba, Okinawa, Ethiopia, California's Bay Area, Borneo, Istanbul, and Charleston, S.C.
