The company says someone planted it with malicious intent, and intends to take legal action.
Fast food giant McDonald's isn't putting up with any more blows to its struggling reputation. Business Insider reports that the company's Mexican division is fighting back against claims that one of its restaurants served a burger topped with a severed rodent head.

A revolting image of the burger, allegedly served to a customer at a store near Mexico City, surfaced in early November; it quickly went viral, prompting local authorities to shut down the restaurant for more than two weeks to investigate. According to the Express, a company rep initially insisted the rodent head (people can't seem to agree if it's a rat or a mouse) was "planted there" in order to extort money from the company. McDonald's then turned to Twitter, calling the reports "false" and adding that, "We operate under the strictest quality controls, processes, inspections, and certifications."

Health inspectors have since released a statement confirming that the animal wasn't cooked in the restaurant, says The Independent. Acting off the new information, the chain announced in a statement that it was enlisting private investigators to track down the person who planted the nasty surprise, and that it plans to pursue legal action against them. Reached for comment by Eater, a McDonald's spokesperson issued the following statement:
This is an ongoing investigation and we will pursue legal action against the individuals responsible. Our hygiene and quality controls are rigorous. We are confident our investigations and those by the relevant authorities will confirm that McDonald’s fully complies with the highest standards of quality, freshness and cleanliness in our restaurants. We are working with the Mexican authorities to prove these accusations are false.
This isn't the first time a company has been accused of serving unsavory off-menu items in the form of rodents. In June, a Texas man filed a lawsuit against MillerCoors and 7-Eleven after he allegedly found a rat "marinating" in beer. That same month, a KFC customer claimed he was served a deep-fried rat — though that was soon proved to be a hoax.
