Former Arby's Employee Claims She Was Denied Promotion Because of Her Accent

The woman was later fired.

A former employee of a Pittsburgh-area Arby's location is suing the company for discrimination, reports the Pennsylvania Record. Maria Dyll, a native of the Philippines, claims she was passed over for a promotion due to her accent.

In the suit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, Dyll says she began working at Arby's in March 2010 and was promoted to team trainer in May 2013. But when she attempted to begin working at the restaurant's drive-thru window and become a shift manager, her general manager mocked her and denied the opportunity, saying "people would not be able to understand her." Dyll says she was fired in October 2013 when she refused to sign a company document without an attorney present.

Arby's has not responded to an Eater request for comment.

America's mass-market restaurant industry is full of terrible humans treating each other poorly. In October, employees at a Colorado Wendy's were fired for leaving a racist note in a 7-year-old's meal. Later that month, an employee at an Arizona Starbucks sued the company for discriminating against her because she was deaf.
