Cannabis-Laced Coffee Pods Could Hit Canada Soon

Here's one way to ease back into a work week after a cannabis-infused Thanksgiving turkey binge: brew your coffee with weed. CBC reports a Canadian medical marijuana supplier, CannTrust, has applied for a license to produce a new option for waking and baking. Dubbed the CANNCUP, each K-cup style capsule will contain a single serving of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate spiked with a dose of cannabis.

The announcement comes just a few months after the Canadian Supreme Court ruled that medical marijuana patients could use edibles as part of their regimen; however, the government has yet to fully green-light the drug's use in products like desserts and coffee. According to the company, pods will be 100 percent compostable and compatible with K-cup style coffee makers like the ever-popular Keurig. Individual cups will retail for between $3 and $4 CAD ($2.25 to $3 USD). Eater has reached out to CannTrust for more details.

If CANNCUP fails to find approval in Canada, the company could still likely find traction in America, where similar products are already on the market: In May, Uncle Ike's Pot Shop in Seattle launched a line of cannabis K-cups. Each cup sells for $10 a pop and contains 10 milligrams of THC per serving. Los Angeles-based coffee company Compelling & Rich also offers marijuana-roasted beans, although the brew unfortunately won't get you high.
