Can You Spot What's Wrong With This Food Emoji Report?

A wildly popular food emoji has nothing to do with food at all.

In the year 2040, humans will communicately solely via emoji — or so the rabid and widespread embrace of the tiny digital images might have you believe.

new report reveals which food emoji are most popular in each U.S. state, as well as the 10 most popular food emoji overall. While some of the results are wholly unsurprising — pizza is the most-used food emoji in America, people in California really like using the sushi emoji, and the coffee cup is tops in Washington State — others are a bit more unexpected: For example, the number-one food emoji in Texas is not the recently introduced taco or even the chili pepper, but rather a bunch of grapes; and in land-locked North Dakota, the shrimp emoji reigns supreme.

Strangely, the eggplant emoji is wildly popular in a number of states including Nevada, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and New York. Are people really that enthusiastic about eggplant parmesan and baba ghanoush, or is there a more sexually-charged motive at play here? (Spoiler: It's the latter.)

Clearly we as humans have enthusiastically accepted our new emoji overlords. Thanks to modern technology you can order pizza or even cocktails via emoji; bars on the forefront of hipsterdom have all-emoji menus, the New York Times' cooking website now enables users to search for recipes with food emoji, and formal restaurant reviews are being composed solely in emoji.
