Chick-fil-A Is Nixing Cole Slaw From Its Menu, But Now You Can Make It Yourself

It's being replaced with annoyingly trendy kale salad.

Axing an item from a chain restaurant menu is something that rarely goes down without opposition. People have a tendency to flip out and start petitions when their favorite foods go away (think: the McRib, Chili's Awesome Blossom, and Pizza Hut P'Zones).

Sure enough, when Chick-fil-A announced it would discontinue its cole slaw in January 2016, outraged customers took to social media to voice their outrage and publicly shame the company for daring to oust the (somewhat) healthier french fry alternative. "What is wrong with Chick-fil-a? Why are you doing away with what made you such a long-time choice for your old customers? So sad," writes one customer on Facebook. According to Business Insider, the slaw is being replaced by an oh-so-trendy "Superfood" salad made with kale, broccolini, dried cherries, and nuts in a maple vinaigrette. Kale? Way to cater to those millennials, Chick-fil-A.

In response to the customers lamenting the loss of their beloved slaw, Chick-fil-A has reached into its top-secret recipe vault and produced the recipe — one which wouldn't look out of place in your Southern grandmother's time-worn recipe box — freely distributing it for all the world to see.

Behold the recipe below for all your Southern-style slaw needs:

CHICK-FIL-A COLE SLAW

4 teaspoons vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup mayonnaise
2 10-ounce bags fine shredded cabbage, chopped to 1/8 inch
1/4 cup finely chopped carrots

Whisk vinegar, sugar, mustard and salt together until sugar is dissolved. Add mayonnaise and whisk to mix. Add cabbage and carrots. Mix to combine. Refrigerate for 2 hours and serve.

(Makes 6-8 servings)

Chick-fil-A's not the first chain to offer up a recipe for a menu item: Chipotle released its previously top-secret guacamole recipe just in time for Cinco de Mayo 2014. Just don't expect McDonald's to ever follow suit and offer up the recipe for the McRib. It prefers to jerk its loyal fans around by teasing them with sporadic resurrections of the bizarre sandwich; and even if it did make the recipe public, it's doubtful you'd be able to recreate the strangely shaped frozen pork patty with home kitchen equipment anyway.
