Bitter Sugar vs. Corn Syrup Lawsuit Ends in Settlement

The fight was years in the making.

The seemingly never-ending legal fight between America's sugar and high fructose corn syrup industries has come to an end. The lawsuit, which began earlier this month after years of false-advertising allegations from both both sides, was settled out of court Friday, reports the Los Angeles Times. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Back in 2010, the Corn Refiners Association attempted to rebrand high fructose corn syrup as "corn sugar," which would change the way the ingredient was listed on food labels. The thinking was corn syrup had unfairly gained a bad reputation as the source of health problems in the United States, and the industry wanted Americans to realize it wasn't any worse than cane sugar — consumption of corn syrup was on the decline, and some companies were dropping it from their products. There was even a "sugar is sugar" ad campaign. A similar rebranding had previously worked for low eurcic acid rapeseed oil, which changed its name to canola oil.

But, the regular sugar industry wasn't happy with that move. About six months after the campaign launched, three major sugar companies asked a U.S. District Court to shut it down, calling it false advertising to suggest corn syrup was natural and the same type of product as cane sugar. Since then, both sides have hurled allegations and insults at one another. The half-decade-long fight ended with the following statement:

"The parties jointly announce today that they have reached a settlement of a lawsuit pending in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

"The details of the settlement agreement are confidential.

"The Parties continue their commitments to practices that encourage safe and healthful use of their products, including moderation in the consumption of table sugar, high fructose corn syrup and other sweeteners."
