Hero Chefs Plan to Break the Record for World's Longest Pizza

The pizza will stretch more than a mile.

Bold culinarians already have created the world's longest bratwurst and ice cream sundae in recent months, and next on the agenda is pizza. A group of chefs in Naples, Italy, are planning to cook up a margherita pie that covers an incredible 1.2 miles, reports the Local. If the they're successful, the pizza will destroy the current record holder, a mile-long pizza that was baked at last year's Milan Expo.

"It's absolutely a point of pride for our city, which is the home of pizza," Alessandro Marinacci from Naples's Pizza Village told the Local. "What's more, unlike Milan's Expo pizza, our effort will be cooked in the traditional Neapolitan style."

What's it take to produce a pizza of this magnitude? The chefs have acquired five custom-designed motorized wood-burning stoves on wheels. As for the ingredients, they're planning to use two tons of flour, two tons of mozzarella, 3,300 pounds of tomato sauce, 6,800 ounces of oil, and 66 pounds of fresh basil. It will take about 11 hours to bake the whole thing, and more than 100 chefs will work in shifts.

The attempt at pizza-making glory is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 15. Stay tuned.
