Thanks to its many citizens born abroad, Stockholm has become a truly diverse city, both culturally and gastronomically. With only some two million Stockholmers, the city is not very large, but boasts residents from just about every single country in the world.
Visitors yearning for traditional smörgåsbord, pickled herring, meatballs, and gravad lax need not to worry. You can still find it. And the megatrend of creative chefs continuously reinterpreting and reinventing local, Nordic produce and traditions is going stronger than ever. But so is the emergence of an increasing number of venues for well-made food with inspiration from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, South America, and Africa. And often these far-off cuisines meet Sweden's local ingredients to form something quite unique. We are in the midst of a restaurant, cafe, and bar boom never before experienced in Stockholm.
