Hi-C Ecto Cooler Resurrected Ahead of New 'Ghostbusters' Movie

Drink up the nostalgia

After a 15-year absence, a cult favorite of the ‘80s and ‘90s is making its return to store shelves. Hi-C Ecto Cooler will be available nationwide in six-ounce juice boxes and 11.5-ounce cans starting May 30. According to a release, "The cans are specially printed using thermal ink that turns an eerie shade of slime green when the product inside is cold." The launch is timed to coincide with the latest Ghostbusters film, which premieres July 15 with an all-female cast including Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig.

The bright green, citrus-flavored beverage was first released in 1987 as a tie-in with the original Ghostbusters franchise and stayed on shelves until 2001, when it was discontinued. In a release, Coca-Cola says it was spurred to bring the drink by requests from online fan groups along with lobbying from Sony Pictures.

The company is hosting a social media contest to give away 50 Hi-C Ecto Cooler 10-packs from the very first production run in May.

This isn't the first time Coke has tried to bring the '90s back. In 2014, the company re-introduced the world to Surge, a controversial and highly caffeinated beverage. Pepsi has also gotten in on the game, bringing back its bubbly, caffeine-free Crystal Pepsi as a result of fan requests.
