UK Restaurant Where Man Died From Nut Allergy Apologizes in Promotional Email

It referenced the incident, then advertised a new dessert menu

A United Kingdom restaurant where a patron with a nut allergy died from eating a peanut-laced curry sent customers a hollow email apology before going on to promote a dessert menu, ITV News reported. The email from India Garden, whose owner Mohammed Zaman was sentenced to six years in prison, referred to the punishment as a "disappointing decision."

The email came from Zaman's son Emraz and read, in part:

[We]...sincerely apologise to all our loyal customers for the recent heavy press surrounding the Easingwold branch and the somewhat disappointing decision for our founding father Mr Zaman. Mistakes have been made and this is no excuse but now is a time to move on as Mr Zaman so wishes." It continued with details of its new dessert menu and philosophy of creating "real quality Indian cuisine of the highest standard.

In early 2014, a customer named Paul Wilson ordered curry from India Garden, specifying that he had a nut allergy. However, his order, which came with a "no nuts" label, was found to contain groundnut powder. The meal caused Wilson to go into anaphylactic shock, and he was hospitalized and later died. Zaman went to trial and was found guilty of manslaughter, with prosecutors alleging gross negligence on his part for not disclosing that certain foods contained peanuts.

The restaurant has apparently implemented new food safety procedures to label allergens.
