Eat like Blanche, Rose, Sophia, and Dorothy
Time to book a flight to New York City: The Northern Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights is getting a Golden Girls-themed restaurant come September. It's called Rue La Rue Café, reports DNAInfo, and the concept was dreamt up by Michael J. LaRue, a close friend of late actress Rue McClanahan (AKA Blanche Devereaux, the show's saucy Southern belle); he plans to decorate the café with memorabilia he inherited from McClanahan.
The restaurant will "serve soups, wraps, salads, desserts, baked treats and wine," all of which seem appropriate for groups of sassy septuagenarians. According to LaRue, the Walt Disney Company — which owns the rights to the show — is "allowing the café to manufacture its very own Golden Girls’ merchandise using images from the television show." (Disney has not yet commented.)
McClanahan's son is reportedly a partner in the venture. LaRue also says Betty White, who played the guileless Rose Nylund on the series, will be in attendance for the restaurant's grand opening. Will a Golden Girls restaurant become a must-visit for tourists, right behind ice skating in Rockefeller Center and cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery? Stay tuned.
Restaurants inspired by hit 90s television shows are apparently having a moment: A Saved by the Bell pop-up recently hit Chicago, and so far diners seem delighted by dishes like AC Sliders and Mac 'n Screech.
