What could go wrong?
Hurlers of sharp objects in Ontario, Canada, is hoping to pair booze with their favorite sport. The Toronto Star reports that the Backyard Axe-Throwing League, a group that chucks hand axes at targets for fun, is seeking liquor licenses for its six locations throughout the province.
The company currently allows customers to bring in outside food and non-alcoholic beverages, but hopes to see that change. CEO Matt Wilson tells the paper that the company has "received glowing reviews" from safety specialists and is confident they'll be allowed to sell alcoholic beverages by fall.
All participants at Backyard Axe locations receive a 20-30 minute training session and are carefully supervised by staff. The company claims that the past five years it's never had any major injuries. "We want people to leave with a smile, and we're excited for the upcoming change" Wilson says. "Axe-throwing can be quite cathartic."
Drinking and weapon handling is surprisingly (or perhaps unsurprisingly) common in the United States. The Frisco Gun Club in Dallas features "the nation's largest indoor luxury gun range with a restaurant, bar and cigar lounge for VIP Club members," and private Italian-American social club Tiro a Segno in New York features a bar and dining room with a private shooting range. Gun ranges in Oklahoma and Florida have also sought to pair booze with bullets in recent years. Of course, that's no axe-throwing club.
