Shake Shack Opens in South Korea This Summer

Shake Shack's expansion into South Korea is imminent. The fast-casual burger chain announced this morning that it will open its first-ever South Korean location this summer in Seoul's Gangnam District.

In a press release, CEO Randy Garutti said, "the vibrant energy and spirit found on Gangnam Avenue set the tone for an ideal community gathering place, which we've been building since our original Shack in Madison Square Park, New York City."

The launch of the new location will begin with an art installation — featuring complimentary phone charging stations and inspired by "the New York City lights" — to take place during construction.

The company announced it would expand to South Korea last year through a partnership with SPC Group, which owns and operates 30 different food brands in Asia and the U.S.. The partners will open one Shack location in 2016 but have plans to open 25 total in Korea by 2025.

Shake Shack has gradually expanded its presence in Asia, where it has proved to have a cult-like following not unlike that in the U.S. Its first location in Japan drew hundreds on its opening day in 2015.
