Walmart Bakes Customer an ISIS Cake After Refusing to Make a Confederate Flag Cake

"The cake should not have been made."

A Walmart in Louisiana is under fire for what its bakery employees will and will not put on a cake. According to ABC News, customer Chuck Netzhammer ordered a cake last Thursday to be decorated with the Confederate flag and the phrase "Heritage Not Hate." However, the bakery denied his request.

Walmart is one of many companies that banned sales of controversial Confederate flag merchandise following the shooting of nine African Americans in a church in Charleston in what is considered to be a hate crime. Restaurants have also removed the flag, which comedian Jon Stewart believes is an "archaic symbol of racist insurrection."

Netzhammer decided to try his luck again, this time successfully submitting an order for a flag that represents the terrorist group ISIS. Netzhammer notes in a YouTube video about the cake, "That's an ISIS battle flag cake that anybody can go buy at Walmart... but you can't buy a Confederate flag toy, with like, say, a 'Dukes of Hazzards' car." He adds, "ISIS happens to be somebody who we're fighting against right now who are killing our men and boys overseas and are beheading Christians."

Walmart has apologized for the incident, saying that it was a mistake. A spokesperson tells ABC News: "An associate in a local store did not know what the design meant and made a mistake. The cake should not have been made and we apologize." Watch Netzhammer's video about the cake below:

61st annual show sponsored by the Specialty Food Association

Top Ten Things Eaten at the Fancy Food Show

First, a disclaimer: the show is not over. Still, after eating our way through exhibit after exhibit, it's time to declare a few things officially delicious. With that in mind, here are the Top Ten Things we've eaten . . . so far.

10. Off the Corn. This is a chip made of sweet corn instead of potato. The founder, Cameron Sheldrake, was on Shark Tank, and although he didn't get a backer, he hasn't stopped. Nor should he. These things are tasty. And word on the showroom floor is that he's launching a Habanero Lime flavor and a Salt & Pepper variety.

9. Filled Waffles. Sweet or savory, take your pick. We loved the Spinach in the savory category and, of course, the chocolate filled. Kind of a brilliant idea that food hackers do at home, now in a product you can buy and enjoy.

8. Cinnamon Sauerkraut. Who'd have thought that combination would work so well?

7. Caramels--and it was a tie. Amella had a honey caramel that was smooth and silky, rather than creamy; Olive and Sinclair offered two new varieties that earned them both flavor and innovation points: Duck Fat Caramels and Sea Salt & Vinegar. Yep, vinegar. You just have to try them. And while you are ordering, you might try the Buttermilk White Chocolate candy.

6. Truffle Pizza. Need I say more?

5. Nar Gourmet's Whole Fruit Jams. The Orange is unlike anything seen before, with a flavor that will have toast and jam your new favorite meal. As a matter of fact, forget the toast.

4.

Want to be a Better Cook? Serve Vegetables for Dinner

Veggie sides apparently make meaty mains taste better.

Despite that fact that major American food companies are thriving by offering pizza with hot dogs stuffed in the crust and french fries loaded with pepperoni and cheese, this country really believes vegetables are a good thing. A recent study conducted by the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab finds that vegetables on the dinner plate make entrees taste better and home cooks more heroic.

The study consists of two surveys given to a group of 500 American mothers. In the first, the participants were asked to comment on five hypothetical meal scenarios, some featuring vegetables and some without. In the second, they commented on a story of a woman who spends her day working, running errands, preparing a family dinner, and watching TV with her husband. The dinner included a vegetable in only some of the respondents' story. Among the study's findings:

  • "Nearly all mothers believed vegetables made the meal. ... Additionally, respondents generally agreed that the addition of vegetables make the main course taste better."
  • "When the mother was described as having served vegetables, the average percentage who used positive attributes to describe her was significantly higher, and the average percentage using negative attributes was significantly lower."
  • "Given that the significant descriptors (thoughtful and attentive vs. lazy and self-absorbed) are impacted either positively (thoughtful and attentive) or negatively (lazy and self-absorbed) by the addition of frozen green beans to the meal, a connection between being a caring meal preparer and serving vegetables is suggested."
  • "A notable finding is that the four vegetables that most frequently appeared in these favorite meals were broccoli (75.8 percent), green beans (52.9), carrots (39.8), and tomatoes (34.8)."
  • "Most of the vegetables consumed in America — nearly 70 percent — are eaten during the evening meal. Unfortunately, vegetables are served with only 23 percent of all American dinners."

So, it appears that vegetables hold the key to happiness for American mothers at the dinner table. There's no study yet on just how much picky children might disagree.
