Alain Ducasse's Palace of Versailles Restaurant Opens in September

Look for 'an elegant contemporary café, open to all'

French mega-chef Alain Ducasse announced plans to open a restaurant at the Palace of Versailles in April, and now it appears the launch date is coming soon. Ducasse has revealed a timeline that targets a September debut for Ore, which will offer separate lunch and dinner experiences.

"During the day, the restaurant Ore is an elegant contemporary café, open to all," reads a press release. "A French-inspired menu with classics of our cuisine, alongside light and quick snacks, desserts, and gourmet pastries.

"In the evening, Ducasse au Château de Versailles is an exclusive dining experience. As the Palace slowly empties itself, the restaurant becomes a stage for grand dinners and exclusive events."

"Ore" is the Latin word for "mouth." Ducasse, who has accumulated an astonishing 21 Michelin stars over the course of his career, is opening the restaurant as part of a redevelopment project at the palace that also includes a 20-room hotel. Renovations are expected to cost over $15 million, and the final product "will remain faithful to the opulent, lavish style of the 18th century," according to CTV News. The hotel should open sometime in 2018, and it will allow visitors to spend the night on the palace grounds for the first time.

Ore was designed by architects Dominique Perrault and Frédéric Didier. The restaurant pays tribute to "the Sun King's splendor and many contemporary reinterpretations of historical decorative themes."

"Versailles is a dream that fascinates and impassions me," Ducasse says on his forthcoming restaurant's website. "Everything still amazes me as if each visit was my first. It is truly a privilege to bring my modest contribution to the palace's contemporary history."

This Concoction Transforms Booze Into 'Edible Bubbles'

It's unclear why this needs to exist

The next time drinking a cocktail makes you feel a little too adult, consider returning to your childlike roots by transforming the drink into boozy bubbles you can eat. Someone in the United Kingdom has invented Bubble Lick Edible Bubbles, which uses a non-toxic solution to transform any liquid — including alcoholic beverages — into "tasty edible bubbles."

"It comes in a pack of six bottles, each containing 25ml of bubble solution with space remaining in the bottle to add any beverage you fancy — lemonade, cola, cold-press coffee, gin, tequila — anything (well, not thick liquids like milk)," reads the product's official description. "Screw the lid back on, give the bottle a gentle rock, and just like that, your favorite drink has been transformed into bubbly deliciousness, ready to be blown all over the place with the included wands."

Apparently this innovation came about because the inventor's children asked, "Why can't bubbles be lickable and made from any liquid?" While that sounds less like realistic conversation and more like PR copy, in the end, it doesn't matter. The world's childlike grown-ups finally have a more fun way to consume their beverages of choice.

KFC's New Meal Box Can Charge Your Smartphone

But not very well, as it turns out

Good news for anyone who has ever needed to charge their phone, but found themselves neck-high in fried chicken and unable to walk to the nearest outlet. KFC's new meal box includes a USB port, so diners can simultaneously eat fried chicken, charge their phone, and try not to get chicken grease all over said phone.

Deccan Chronicle reports the the 5-in-1 mealbox, dubbed "Watt a Box," comes complete with an "integrated powerbank, allowing customers to charge their phones while eating."

According to a trial by BGR, however, the powerbank doesn't even come close to fully charging a phone. Testers who charged an iPhone with the box said it only gained 17 percent battery after charging for half-an-hour, during which time the powerbank became completely drained. After recharging the power bank itself, testers tried charging the phone again, "but the power bank ran out of juice again with the phone gaining just seven percent of charge."

Unfortunately for those in the U.S. looking for a really fattening meal that doubles as a really terrible phone charger, the Watt a Box is only available in select stores in Delhi and Mumbai.

KFC has unveiled similar tech-meets-fast-food products in other markets, though. Last year in Canada, the chicken chain released a photo printer that was built inside its signature bucket of grease-stained fried chicken.

Woman Dials 911 to Report Pizza's Suspicious Lack of Cheese

This does not qualify as an emergency

If your faith in humanity needs to be taken down a peg, look no further: A woman in Newfoundland, Canada, recently called 911 to report an emergency of epic proportions — her pizza did not have enough cheese on it.

According to the Telegraph, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary received the bizarre call. "The individual had an issue with the company she bought the pizza from, and there wasn't enough cheese, and had approached the company and didn't like whatever response they had given," said Constable Geoff Higdon.

The caller was informed she needed to speak with the manager of the company, rather than the police (amazingly, she wasn't ticketed for wasting their time).

Sadly, dialing 911 to report food-related — and completely non-emergency — issues is nothing new. In 2014, a woman was arrested after calling 911 when a local Subway supposedly used the wrong sauce on her Flatizza.

In that instance, the Subway patron asked the employees for a refund. After they refused, she asked a 911 operator to send a cop to the restaurant to help her out. The operator did indeed send an officer, but to arrest Hall and charge her with "misuse of the 911 system."

The Worst Subway Sandwiches, According to the Internet

Lukewarm tuna salad topped with extra meatballs, anyone?

A thread on the Reddit subforum AskReddit is imploring commenters to dream up the "worst Subway sandwich possible, using actual ingredients from Subway." The query has so far elicited more than 5,700 comments and the results are, needless to say, pretty disgusting.

The most common theme appears to be odd combinations of textures and temperatures — tuna salad topped with meatballs, for instance — or microwaved toppings that are meant to be served cold. One user even claims a customer would request chocolate chip cookies, and pickles, on his sandwich.

One Reddit user, who described themselves as a "former Subway sandwich artist," described the worst combo they'd ever seen in real life: white bread, cheese, and three lines of every single sauce available. "When you fold it and get ready to cut in half, the insides squirt out at every which angle," writes user thistimethatonetime. "This kid would just have the most sinister laugh every time he saw us cut his sandwich in half. Ordered the thing twice a week, every week until I quit."

A few other disgusting flavor combos contributed by Redditors:

  1. Six chocolate chip cookies cut in half and stacked, roast beef, and mayonnaise, on a honey-oat bun.
  2. Footlong, on white, with just olives and tomato sauce.
  3. Double seafood salad, on white, microwaved (not toasted) with extra mayo.

As The Office's Michael Scott (whose go-to sandwich order is bologna, tomato, and ketchup) can attest, odd combinations don't always make for the best flavors:

Admittedly, none of the above even hold a candle to the culinary surprise that is Subway's infamous spinach and dead mouse sandwich.

Shake Shack's Mega-Expansion Plans; Ben & Jerry's Cookie Dough Beer

Five things to know today

Happy Tuesday. Today, like every other day, noted chilihead Hillary Clinton will eat a single hot pepper. Clinton's spicy food obsession began as a quest to strengthen her immune system; these days, her hot sauce of choice is one called Ninja Squirrel, which can be purchased at Whole Foods. The more you know.

In today's food news: Details on Shake Shack's mega-expansion plans; New York City's latest Instagram-bait pastry; and more.

— It's no secret Shake Shack is on a mission to conquer the world — but where will its crinkle fries put down roots next? CEO Randy Garutti says the company is eyeing major growth in both urban and suburban Chicago as well as continued expansion on the West Coast; there could eventually be as many as 450 locations in the U.S.

— New York City, land of rainbow bagels, has a new baked good obsession (at least according to Instagram): birthday cake croissants, which are an affront to both birthdays and French patissiers.

— Beer ice cream has definitely been done, but ice cream beer? Ben & Jerry's has teamed up with New Belgium to unveil a very weird-sounding Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ale, slated for release this fall. The duo already collaborated on a Salted Caramel Brownie brown ale, which elicited "Won't someone please think of the children?" cries from alcohol watchdog groups. (Just wait till B&J decide to make a weed ice cream.)

— Nashville's the Catbird Seat just became the latest restaurant to adopt Tock, Chicago restaurateur Nick Kokonas's online ticketing system. Planning a trip to Nashville? Snagging a table just got that much easier.

— There was no Burger King presence in France between 1997 and 2012. (Sacré bleu?) A bizarre new faux-documentary from the fast food chain attempts to tell the story of that dark 15-year period. Here it is in English, but fair warning: You'll never get these seven minutes of your life back.

The 12 Hottest New Restaurants in Asheville

The buzziest restaurants to check out in North Carolina right now

Today, Eater returns to Asheville, North Carolina to focus on 12 newish restaurants that have been garnering some serious buzz. Like last time around, Eater has asked Ashvegas.com founder and editor Jason Sandford for his picks of the hottest openings of the past year or so.

So what's hot in Asheville? Tacos — two new places have sprung up, one more traditional (Mamacita's Taco Temple) and the other a bit more experimental (TacoBilly). Successful food truck operators are going brick and mortar (Little Bee Thai, Gypsy Queen Deli and Market). There's also a new bakery committed to old fashioned bread-making (OWL), a beer brewery with a serious sandwich shop to match (Sweeten Creek Brewery), and a quirky restaurant that serves curries from around the world (Blue Dream Curry House). Without further ado, and in geographic order, the Eater Heatmap to Asheville:

Beer Geeks Flip for These Small Releases From Big Breweries

Brexit Could Spell Danger for Scotch and Stilton Cheese

The European Union currently protects these foods — but that could all change with Thursday's vote

"Brexit" may sound like a corporate food service company or an industrial-strength cleaner, but it's considerably more important than that: It refers to the United Kingdom's possible separation from the European Union, a referendum that's being put to the vote on Thursday.

If UK voters decide to leave the EU, it will have far-reaching implications, from suspending immigration to disrupting trade with other nations and possibly triggering a recession. But on a smaller scale, the New Republic points out it could also have a major impact on Britain's prized specialty foods.

As the New Republic explains, "The European Union’s Protected Designation of Origin status guarantees and safeguards the authenticity of many regional and traditional foods," such as Scotch whiskey and Stilton cheese. Leaving the EU would strip away those protections for UK products, meaning for instance, any cheesemaker in the world could potentially label their product as "Stilton" without ramifications.

While a newly independent UK could seek UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status for, say, the process of making Scotch, such proclamations don't actually do much to protect foodstuffs from imitators; it's more of a formality intended to help instill a sense of national pride (and perhaps give tourism a boost).

But however much of an impact it could have on the UK's specialty foods, Brexit would have much greater implications for the restaurant industry. "The main concern has been for the hospitality and tourism industry because the free movement of workers within the EU will be a problem — so chefs and especially servers are going to be hit the hardest," London resident and Eater contributor Pelin Keskin explains. "The obsession with a threat to national identity and fear of more brown bodies results in Brexiters thinking they're shedding off what is essentially an imagined burden. Instead they'll be shedding off a real part of the identity they're claiming to protect."

Kelis Is Hosting a Burger Pop-Up in London

Plus five more pop-up concepts we'd like to see from musicians

Kelis is hosting a burger pop-up in London, and the question that's on everyone's mind is: Will there or won't there be milkshakes?

According to NME, the pop-up is a collaboration with burger restaurant Le Bun; catch it at Leicester House on July 6, 7, 13, and 14 or at the Standon Calling music festival that takes place at the end of July. According to NME, the menu will include burgers with arepas (South American corn cakes) standing in for the usual buns.

A Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef, Kelis released a cookbook last fall, so a burger pop-up seems like a natural next step.

Plenty of other musicians are involved in restaurants or have their own beers, but pop-ups allow for a certain amount of creative freedom that seems well-suited to artists. Here are five other pop-up concepts we'd like to see hosted by musicians:

1) A craft cocktail bar from Snoop Dogg serving artisanal gin and juice drinks. A speakeasy-style smoke room in the back offers blunts hand-rolled with organic hemp wrappers.

2) A Coldplay café where literally every food is yellow. (Turmeric is used rather than artificial coloring, because while Chris Martin may be consciously uncoupled from ex-wife Gwyneth, her health nut influence remains.)

3) Kanye's Krazy Kakeshop. Think Ace of Cakes, but every creation has a 3D butt on it in honor of his wife.

4) Wu-Tang Ice C.R.E.A.M. scoop shop. Flavors include Rza Raspberry sorbet and Gravel Pit, which is like Rocky Road but grittier.

5) 50 Cent's pop-up candy shop. 100 percent of the proceeds go to restoring the rapper's bank account, since he's (supposedly) broke.
