Michelin Will Publish Its First Shanghai Guide Later This Year

It's the first Michelin guide for mainland China

China will soon be seeing stars. Michelin has announced it will bring its fabled restaurant guidebooks to the world's most populous nation, reports the South China Morning Post, beginning with the city of Shanghai.

Michelin debuted its Hong Kong & Macau guide back in 2009, but this will be its first foray into mainland China, with Michelin Shanghai 2017 slated to be published later this year. This will mark the 28th international edition for the guide, which also recently announced expansions into Seoul and Singapore.

"The richness and quality of Shanghai’s culinary scene completely won us over," Michael Ellis, international director of the guides, said in a statement. "The city is an economic and cultural crossroads, and its gastronomy is the result of a strong culinary heritage which makes the dining scene very exciting."

The 2016 edition of its Hong Kong & Macau guide marked the first time Michelin has recognized street food, featuring dozens of vendors hawking everything from fried noodles to Cantonese waffles.
