CBS Picks up a Comedy Pilot About a Doughnut Shop

'Superior Doughnuts' is based on a play of the same name

In a move that amounts to some must-see TV for Homer J. Simpson, CBS has picked up the pilot for a show called Superior Doughnuts, reports Variety. The comedy is based on a 2008 play by Tracy Letts, and its plot follows "the relationship between the owner of a donut shop, his new young employee, and their patrons in a gentrifying neighborhood of Chicago."

The Superior Doughnuts writing team consists of Bob Daily, a veteran of Desperate Housewives and Frasier, and Neil Goldman and Garrett Donovan, both of whom wrote for Family Guy, Scrubs, and Community. Starring in the show, according to Deadline, are:

• Brian d'Arcy James (Smash) as Arthur, the owner of a doughnut shop.
• Jermaine Fowler (Friends of the People) as Franco, Arthur's young employee.
• David Koechner (The Office) as Tush, a regular customer at the shop.
• Megyn Price (Rules of Engagement) as Randy, a "sarcastic and matter-of-fact street cop."
• Theater actor Sarah Stiles as Dana, a professor at nearby Loyola University "with a weakness for jelly donuts and a soft spot for Arthur and her fellow patrons."

There's no guarantee the show will be picked up for a full season, but the team will hope it can garner the kind of accolades earned by series such as Bob's Burgers. If that happens, there might be a cookbook in Superior Doughnuts's future.
