London Restaurant Prints Racial Slur on Customer's Receipt, Apologizes

The offending server has been suspended

Another day, another racist restaurant receipt: A group of women dining at a London bar called The Happenstance yesterday were shocked to discover a racial slur printed on their bill, reports The Independent.

A photo of the receipt was tweeted by a friend of the women and quickly made the rounds on Twitter, being retweeted nearly 400 times. According to tweets, one of the diners in the group was black; the rest of the women were white, as were the restaurant's staff and all or most of the other customers. The black woman's request for no ice in her soft drink apparently spurred the server to enter a modifier of "NO ICE NI**A" into the restaurant's point-of-sales system; according to the tweets, the staff initially denied responsibility for the incident.

The business quickly took responsibility and apologized for the incident; a spokesperson for the restaurant group posted the following statement to The Happenstance's Facebook page:

We are appalled by the unacceptable behaviour of one of our waiting staff. He has been suspended from duty pending a full disciplinary. We have contacted two members of the group that were at The Happenstance yesterday afternoon and have apologised unequivocally. Drake & Morgan as a business do not discriminate on the grounds of race, age, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, disability or colour. The principles of non-discrimination and equality of opportunity also apply to the way in which staff treat customers as well as colleagues. We cannot apologise enough and are saddened that one person’s irresponsible behaviour could risk damaging our reputation

Sadly, racist slurs seem to show up on receipts more often than one might expect: A Denver restaurant made headlines after a customer got a receipt reading "you f------ Mexicans," and a restaurant in Pennsylvania was also caught printing the N-word on a customer's tab and tried to pass it off as a light-hearted joke.
