K-Cup Recycling Creates Jobs; Costco Shoppers Fight Over Nutella Waffles

And, SodaStream wants to give jobs to 1,000 Syrian refugees.

— Keurig K-Cups make for a controversial product in the coffee-drinking community. Sure, they provide a solid cup of joe with great convenience, but they also create an unseemly amount of waste. To combat that waste, a furniture store in Canada has started a K-Cup recycling program, which has the added benefit of giving jobs to people with disabilities. The store already uses trucks to deliver furniture, and instead of making their return trips with no cargo, they now carry loads of the used pods to recycling facilities. Employees of the Dartmouth Adult Services Centre then break down the K-Cups. "There is absolutely nothing that isn't great about this project," says Cathy Deagle-Gammon, the Centre's executive director.

— Put Nutella and waffles together, and you've created a product that may lead to mass-hysteria. A 24-year-old Costco shopper in Burbank, Calif., was arrested Tuesday after he punched a 78-year-old who confronted him for taking too many free samples of the chocolatey, hazelnutty breakfast item. "The victim told [Derrick Gharabighi] that he wanted a sample and he shouldn't take so many," Burbank police Sgt. Claudio Losacco told the Los Angeles Times. Gharabighi responded by punching the elderly man in the face. Gharabighi was charged with one count of elder abuse, as well as the special allegation that he inflicted great bodily harm on the elderly man, and he faces a maximum of 11 years in prison.

— SodaStream, the company that manufactures machines for at-home water carbonation, wants to offer 1,000 jobs to displaced Syrian refugees. The only problem is that the company's factory is in Rahat, Israel, and the Israeli government is unlikely to approve the the offer. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has held a firm stance against accepting any Syrian refugees into the country, and he is unlikely to relent. SodaStream CEO Daniel Birnbaum says he can't be apathetic to the situation: "As the son of a Holocaust survivor, I refuse to stand by and observe this human tragedy unfold right across the border in Syria."
