How to Stay at Julia Child's French Cottage for Free

Alternatively, you can cough up $600 a night

Staying at culinary icon Julia Child's countryside cottage in the French Riviera is a dream vacation for countless food obsessives — and recently, it actually became possible. The new owner of the house built by Child and her husband Paul back in the early 1960s is now available for renting via Airbnb.

But there is a chance — however slight — you and a guest can stay there for free: The game-changing rental site is holding a contest to give away a one night's stay at the quaint house (which is being transformed into a cooking and yoga retreat), including round-trip airfare. The stay will take place May 29 and will also include a guided shopping trip to a local farmers market and boulangerie, as well as a chance to cook a meal in Child's kitchen. Hopefuls should write an answer to the question, "How would you make the most of your time living like a chef in Provence?" using anywhere from 50 to 500 characters (that's letters, not words).

Contest losers can still vacation at La Pitchoune, however — provided they have the $600 per night (five night minimum) to finance that fantasy.
