Homer Simpson Settles New York vs. Chicago Pizza Debate Once and for All

It's one of the most hotly contested debates in the culinary universe: Which pizza reigns supreme, New York-style or Chicago deep dish?

Loyalists on both sides have thrown countless jabs at the opposition, but Chicago's beloved foodstuff seems to get most of the flak: Mario Batali has previously stated that Italians "would kill themselves" if they witnessed the horrors of Chicago deep dish, and Jon Stewart has proclaimed it "an above ground marinara swimming pool for rats." Even Chicago Bulls player Pau Gasol has publicly rejected his city's most famous dish, calling it "a cake of melted cheese" (give him a break, he's from Spain).

Thankfully, pop culture luminary Homer Simpson has weighed in to settle the debate once and for all. Sunday's episode of The Simpsons, which is in its 27th season, featured a live, improvised question-and-answer session with the pink doughnut-loving animated man himself, and one of the fan queries was about pizza.

Asked whether he preferred New York or Chicago style pizza, Simpson said, "I prefer Chicago deep dish because I like Italian better than Chinese." Of course, Dan Castellaneta, who has voiced Homer since the show's inception, is a Chicago native — so it seems the deck was stacked against New York. (And while it's true that Chicago-style pizza is definitely not an Italian creation, what Chinese cuisine has to do with any of this is literally anyone's guess. Then again, Homer has never been much of an intellectual.)
