The pair has apologized but are still facing serious backlash.
The owners of Asheville, North Carolina shop Waking Life Espresso are in hot water this week after it was revealed that the pair authored the misogynistic pickup line blog, podcast, and twitter account Holistic Game (tagline: "Putting sweet D in the tender V since 2013"). According to Jezebel, the anonymous site operated by Jared Rutledge and Jacob Owens detailed the duo's, often degrading, sexual conquests. In a post from March 2015 (assumed to be written by Rutledge because Owens claims not to have contributed to the blogs), the author details a list of all his "lays." One reads:
21. L. - Social Circle - 6/7/5 - Bail
Friend of my brother's, met her at a party. Dominant and masculine acting in public, sweet and submissive in private. She'd been abused as a child and has some real issues. I stopped seeing her because she talked about not wanting commitment, then started acting clingy and dramatic. She's had a boyfriend for a year or so and it seems solid.
In another the author writes:
25. M. - Business - 7/6/7 - Played
Sweet, tall mid-twenties girl with interesting hobbies and a kind demeanor. I met her in my business and we fucked a few times before she decided she wanted something serious and ended it. I didn't mind because her pussy was huge and the sex wasn't that enjoyable. She's semi-dating a musician acquaintance, and seems to be doing well.
Since news broke of Waking Life has been overwhelmed by protests and many local business owners have pulled the company's bottled iced coffee from their shelves, according Citizen-Times. The café temporarily shuttered on Monday. Owens and Rutledge have issued apologies both individually and jointly posted to the door of their café:
"We've said terrible and demeaning things — things that belie unhealthy thought patterns that do not contribute to a stable and equal society . . . We apologize to the women in our lives and the greater community for the harm we've caused and potential danger we've put them in with our attitudes and beliefs."
In the message, Rutledge and Owens pledge to donate all their profits through the end of the year to Our Voice, a non-profit sexual assault education and advocacy group. In response, Our Voice issued a statement that it will not be accepting the café owners' money.

Unfortunately, misogyny is alive and well in society and therefore occasionally rears its ugly head in the restaurant business. One owner of Montreal bar Nacho Libre sparked a fire storm last year when he wrote on the business' sandwich board: "Pick-up line of the day: Does this tissue smell like chloroform?" Meanwhile, bars in Dallas, Austin, and Houston all seem to think the same domestic violence joke is funny.
